PNNL Wins Six R&D 100 Honors

The R&D 100 Awards, now in its 58th year, recognize pioneering scientific technologies from industry, the federal government, and academia. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has been the recipient of 116 awards since the program’s inception.

This year’s PNNL winners include:

  • Millimeter-wave shoe scanner uses imaging to detect concealed objects in footwear and can potentially be integrated into the floor of a body-scanning portal.
  • Self-healing cement can that repairs itself when cracked or damaged.
  • Software that assesses post-disaster structural damage
  • Energy-efficient manufacturing method that transforms and improves metals
  • Mapping software developed in cooperation with three other national laboratories.


The renowned worldwide annual competition, sponsored by R&D World magazine receives entries from nearly 20 countries or regions.
