Formerly known as the Tri-Cities Science and Technology Park, the renamed District’s planning and development is directed by a 15-member board comprised of major stakeholders, including the City of Richland, Battelle, Port of Benton, Solaris Group, LLC and Washington State University Tri-Cities. In addition to the name change, the board formally adopted by laws by which to proceed and agreed to focus on a smaller 1,600-acre area for development and recruiting tenants. The TRCD board envisions the District as an asset for all of the Tri-Cities, similar to Kennewick’s Entertainment District and north Pasco’s (agriculture) Processing Center. |

In October 2007, the Tri-Cities Research District was designated an IPZ; however, it was not funded. The legislation only allowed five zones to be funded. During the 2008 session a request to clarify legislative language was made to reauthorize dollars that were left unspent ($275,000).
